The rapid development of information and communication technology in the 21st century has positioned English as one of the primary languages for international communication and global interaction. The 2013 Curriculum, designed to address the 21st-century learning model, recognizes the importance of high school graduates mastering English to convey ideas beyond Indonesia's borders and to absorb ideas from abroad that can be utilized for the benefit of the nation.
In line with this role, this English textbook for Grade X SMA/MA/SMK/MAK aims to develop students' attitudes, knowledge, and communication skills through learning experiences that take the form of a variety of active communication activities, both receptive and productive English language activities. Only by actively engaging in communication activities can students develop their attitudes, knowledge, and communication skills. This book is expected to facilitate the implementation of the 2013 Curriculum in English classes, as the content and learning experiences developed in this book are designed to help students achieve the four core competencies (KI) in the 2013 Curriculum.
The presentation of the content and learning experiences in this book refers to a text-based language learning approach, both spoken and written, using English as a means of communication. By understanding the social function, text structure, and linguistic features of various texts, as mandated by the Content Standards in the 2013 Curriculum, students are expected to be able to express ideas, both orally and in writing, following appropriate rhetorical rules and steps. Furthermore, the content and learning experiences in each chapter of this book are generally structured according to the basic principles of learning a foreign language: presentation or modeling, practice, and production.
This book encourages the use of group learning in various forms, with the goal of enhancing student interaction, thereby developing communication and teamwork skills. In this way, students practice participating in expressing their ideas and thoughts related to the type of text being studied, which ultimately fosters students' courage in expressing their ideas. This book outlines the minimum effort students must make to achieve the expected competencies. In other words, students are encouraged to be courageous in seeking out other available learning resources that are widely available around them. The teacher's role in enhancing and adapting students' absorption capacity to the activities available in this book is crucial. Teachers are expected to enrich the contents of this book with their own creativity and inventions in the form of other appropriate and relevant activities derived from the social and natural environment closest to the teaching context.
